Veeam ONE v11a – Features and Enhancements… plus a significant preview!

This week, in addition to a number of other releases, we released v11a (Build 11.0.1.1880) of Veeam ONE. Looking at the VeeamKB and release notes, this is more than an “a” release and contains some major enhancements and new features. Apart from dealing with a number of minor fixes and enhancements there are also other enhancements, additional alarms and reports and other significant new features. In terms of what is new in this release, I’ve listed down my top features and enhancements from the What’s New below, but without question, the thing that I am excited about the most is the preview of the new RESTful API.

A(PI) Significant Preview

It was little known that we started the Veeam ONE API journey back with the release of v11, but it was very limited in scope… this release adds the preview of what is to come and I’m pretty excited about what it opens up a range of opportunities for our customer and service providers to consume Veeam ONE data programatically. I’m not going to spend any more time on this feature in this post, but you will see some content come out from me on the offical Veeam.com Blog and i’ll look to create more content down the track around this.

Veeam ONE API

Core Veeam Backup & Replication Alarms and Reporting

The VeeamKB lists a number of enhancements relating to this, I’ve pulled those directly out of the KB below:

  • Workload protection history report enhancements: Users can now customize the report output by selecting desired columns, view KPI graphs to make sure the backup KPIs are met and success/failure rates are staying at the appropriate level, report on backup copy (periodic) jobs transferring Nutanix AHV backups and file to tape jobs.
  • Backup infrastructure custom data report enhancements:With V11a, customers can utilize a newly added unified “Workload” object which currently includes virtual and physical machines to generate a single custom report for the entire environment.
  • Data change rate history report enhancements:The report has got a complete overhaul and now can be used to perform long-term storage capacity planning based on data change rates
  • Cloud Connect user report (replication) report enhancements: Starting with V11a, service providers utilizing VMware Cloud Director with Veeam Cloud Connect can report on the VMware Cloud Director infrastructure resources and Cloud Director organizations to get an at-a-glance view of the consumed and remaining cloud infrastructure resources.
  • Backup alarms overview report:Customers now have more visibility into the issues affecting VMware vSphere virtual machines processed by Veeam Continuous Data Protection (CDP) technology and can identify the topmost problematic virtual machines.
  • Restore operator activity report:With this release, customers can report on the amount of data restored and identify the age of the restore point involved in the restore process.
  • Linux Hardened Repository and Immutability: Customers can track and report on the length of the immutability period of each restore point created on Linux Hardened Repository, assess the configuration of the immutability settings of Linux Hardened Repositories and scale-out backup repositories consisting of Linux Hardened Repository extents, and track immutability configuration changes over time for simplified auditing and compliance.

Platform and Agent Integration Support

Similar to v11a of Veeam Backup & replication, there is support for VMware Cloud Director 10.3 We also have added readiness support for VMware vSphere 7.0 U3 and for Windows Server 2022. Veeam ONE v11a expandins its coverage of Veeam Agents by adding support for the Unix Agents family to make sure each workload running these operating systems can be effectively and continuously protected by Veeam Backup & Replication. With this release, customers can see the protection state of the machines running IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris and identify machines with no recent backups, find out disabled backup policies, and detect suspicious activity potentially affecting the machines. There are also a number of reports covering IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris backups to help customers audit backup operations, identify unprotected machines, build custom reports for their unique needs, plan repository infrastructure expansions, and make sure configuration of backup policies is consistent across the backup environment.

Google Cloud Support

Veeam ONE v11a adds support of Veeam Cloud products to support Veeam Backup for GCP. This is in addition to AWS and Azure. It has Monitoring and alerting that will monitor policies in each connect GCP backup appliance and alert on slow jobs. There is also reporting that will look at GCP backup environments for compliance with RPOs. With this we continue to support our public cloud marketplace solutions.

Upgrading

As with Veeam Backup & replication, Veeam ONE v11a has been released as an early availability release build via the Veeam R&D Forums.

Early Availability Release: Veeam ONE v11a is currently in the Early Availability stage. This RTM build is fully supported by our Customer Support for production deployments. Until this version becomes generally available (GA) in October, you will only be able to download the bits from this KB article.

Again, as with Veeam Backup & Replication, this shouldn’t discourage people downloading and installing this build, but as should be normal practice, ensure the correct change and testing procedures are in place before any production deployment. One important note to point out is that

If you are running Veeam Availability Suite, upgrade Veeam ONE first; Veeam Backup & Replication must be upgraded after Veeam ONE.

Remember to take a back of the database and ensure you upgrade Veeam ONE first before Veeam Backup & Replication. For installation of the upgrade ensure you are on Veeam ONE version 9.5 Update 4 (build 9.5.4.4566) or later builds before installing this update. After upgrading, your build number will change to 11.0.1.1880.
